Mercor vs micro1: Which AI Training Job Pays Better and Is Safer?

If you have a high-paying specialty such as law, finance, medicine or senior engineering, both Mercor and micro1 are real routes to AI training work, and Datalevo rates both Caution. Choose Mercor if you want weekly pay and openly listed rates, and can accept mandatory screenshot tracking and a confirmed 2026 data breach. Choose micro1 if you prefer pay twice a month through Deel and are comfortable that it owns your recorded AI interview, which you can opt out of having used for future model training. Neither guarantees work after you apply.

This comparison draws on our full reviews of Mercor (checked September 25, 2026, with breach steps updated October 1) and micro1 (checked October 5, 2026). Rates and policies change often, so check each official site before you apply.

Is Mercor or micro1 better paying?

Both advertise high ceilings, and both deserve to be read from the bottom of the range. On Mercor’s board on September 25, 2026, we saw quality analyst roles at $20 to $50 an hour, language roles at $40 to $60, software, finance and consulting experts at $100 to $150, and law experts at $110 to $150. Hours are capped per project, and the cap can drop.

We counted every hourly listing on micro1’s board on October 5, 2026. Of 270, the median ran from $50 to $100 an hour. About a quarter started at $100 or more, but 45% started below $50 and a fifth below $30. Video work for robotics data paid least, down to a flat $6 an hour for a Latin America role. Attorney roles reached $140 to $400.

For a credentialed expert the two look similar. micro1 has more low-paid generalist and video roles. Mercor’s listed rates are easier to scan.

How fast does each one pay?

Mercor pays weekly. Its pay week runs Saturday to Friday on India Standard Time, whatever country you’re in, and payouts are processed by the end of the following Wednesday, Pacific time. Stripe holds your very first payout for 7 days, Wise payments wait until you accept an emailed transfer, and Stripe’s Instant Payout costs 1%.

micro1 pays twice a month through Deel. Its payroll policy says work from the 1st to the 15th is paid around the 20th, and work from the 16th to month end around the 5th. That’s a longer wait than Mercor, though the dates are simple to plan around.

Which is safer for your personal data?

This is the real difference, and neither comes out clean. Mercor’s breach notice, filed with the Massachusetts regulator, confirms that an attacker got into some of its systems between March 24 and 30, 2026, and downloaded data that included contractors’ personal information. A hacking group claimed about four terabytes, including video and verification data, though those figures come from the attackers. Six suits seeking class action status had been filed by April 13. None had been decided when we checked, and Mercor hasn’t admitted wrongdoing. If you’ve uploaded ID to Mercor, our review lists the breach call center and the steps to freeze your credit.

micro1 has no breach in our review. Its risk is written into its documents. The Candidate Terms give micro1 all rights in your interview recording. The privacy policy lets it train its own models on de-identified audio, video, transcripts and scores, and says this isn’t shared with AI model companies to train theirs. There’s no fixed retention period, and liability is capped at $100. You can opt out of future training at talent.micro1.ai/delete-account. Note the word “future”: do it early.

micro1 also gave us two answers on ID. Its help library says an outside provider handles checks and micro1 never stores your documents, while its privacy policy lists government ID among the data it may collect. Ask [email protected] before you scan a passport.

Do both watch your screen?

Mercor does. You can’t get paid without Insightful, which “may take periodic screenshots (a few per hour)” while the timer runs. Manual time entries aren’t allowed, and it doesn’t run on Chromebooks, iPads or phones. Reviewers can remove hours they decide weren’t project work, and you can dispute before the next pay period.

micro1 uses Hubstaff’s desktop app for hourly projects, and only time spent actively working counts. Our review didn’t confirm whether its setup takes screenshots, so we won’t say it does. On either, work in a separate computer user account with nothing personal on screen.

What do the reviews really measure?

Mercor’s Trustpilot score was 4.3 from 775 reviews, 72% five-star and 12% one-star, and it had replied to just 4% of negative reviews. Praise centres on easy onboarding and on-time weekly pay. Complaints describe sudden offboarding, promised hours that didn’t appear and automated support replies.

micro1’s 4.7 from 10,655 reviews mostly rates a conversation with a bot. Of the 20 newest we read, 16 described the AI interview or assessment and only two described paid work. Its own counter showed over two million candidate reviews against 266 open roles that morning. Both companies invite reviews.

Can you use both Mercor and micro1?

Yes. They’re separate companies and you’re an independent contractor on each. Spreading across two or three platforms is the steadiest setup, since projects on both can end without notice. Check each agreement for conflicts: micro1’s asks you to confirm you aren’t employed by a foundational AI model company, and bars soliciting its staff or contractors for a year.

Red flags to watch

  • Messages about “your Mercor data” or a fee to “reopen” breach protection. Mercor’s official email ends in @mercor.com and it never asks contractors for payment.
  • Applications off the real domains: work.mercor.com for Mercor, micro1.ai and its subdomains for micro1.
  • Any fee to apply, interview or get certified. Neither company mentions one.
  • A “recruiter” who moves you to Telegram or WhatsApp or asks for bank logins.
  • Treating a passed interview as a job. micro1’s FAQ says certification doesn’t guarantee placement.

Which should you choose?

  • You want weekly pay and published rates: Mercor, if you’re comfortable with screenshots and its breach history.
  • Your passport scan leaking again would be a dealbreaker: think hard before applying to Mercor.
  • You don’t want an AI company owning your video interview: skip micro1, or opt out of training straight away.
  • You’re a generalist or want robotics video work: micro1 lists more of these roles, but budget on the low end.
  • You’re a lawyer, banker, doctor or senior engineer: apply to both and compare real offers.
  • You need predictable hours: neither, as your only income.
