Alignerr’s homepage puts one number above everything else: “$80/hr Average pay.” On September 30, 2026, its own job board listed 5,624 open roles. Take the middle of each role’s pay range and the typical listing comes out at $60 an hour. Almost three in four sat below $80.
That gap doesn’t make Alignerr fake. It’s the contractor platform run by Labelbox, an established AI data company, and people do get paid through it. What it does show is how much of the pitch you should discount, and the pay figure is only one of three places where Alignerr’s own pages don’t line up.
Our verdict is Caution. It’s a real platform worth applying to if you have the skills it wants. Just don’t treat the advertised rates as a forecast, and read the arbitration clause before your first 30 days are up.
Last checked: September 30, 2026. How we checked this is explained at the end.
Who you’d actually be working for
The contract is with Alignerr LLC, listed in its Terms of Use at 2261 Market St., STE 85891, San Francisco, with a support email ([email protected]) and a phone number. The site describes itself as “powered by Labelbox,” and the work itself happens inside Labelbox’s labeling tools.
You join as an independent contractor, not an employee. That means no benefits, no withholding and no guaranteed hours. In the US you’ll owe self-employment tax on what you earn.
The onboarding asks for more than most gig apps. Alignerr’s FAQ says identity checks run through Persona, a third-party verification company. Its applicant privacy notice lists the categories it may collect, including Social Security, driver’s license and passport numbers, and “biometric information such as finger/face/voice prints.” On hourly projects, work is tracked with Hubstaff, which, per Alignerr’s own FAQ, takes periodic screenshots and records the URLs and apps you use while the timer runs. The Labelbox editor won’t let you work unless that timer is on.
None of that is unusual for this industry. You should just know it before you hand over a passport scan.
The $80 claim against 5,624 real listings
Alignerr’s jobs page loads its listings from a public feed. We pulled every role it returned on September 30, 2026 and took the midpoint of each advertised hourly range. All 5,624 were quoted per hour, from $10 at the bottom to $400 at the top.
| Category | Open roles | Typical listing (median midpoint) | Listings with midpoint of $80+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| STEM | 2,808 | $55/hr | 21% |
| Coding | 1,659 | $60/hr | 9% |
| General | 741 | $80/hr | 71% |
| Audio | 416 | $100/hr | 63% |
| All roles | 5,624 | $60/hr | 27% |
The average midpoint across everything was $67.60. About half the roles could reach $80 at the very top of their range, but only 27% were centered there.
And a listing isn’t a paycheck. You’re only paid while you’re on a project, and projects start and stop. Breaking Even, a site that tracks AI gig platforms, puts community-reported Alignerr pay at $15 to $60 an hour with an average around $37, based on 81 worker reports. It also warns that voice projects priced per finished hour of audio can work out to roughly $9 per hour of real effort, which matters here because Audio is the category with the highest listed rates.
A fairer way to read Alignerr’s board: expect the number in the listing to be a ceiling for the hours you actually log, and expect weeks with no project at all.

Its FAQ gives two different answers about getting paid
This is the part that should matter most to anyone who’s been removed from a project. Alignerr’s FAQ page answers the same question twice, differently.
- Under the question about unresolved pay or deactivation issues, it says all Alignerrs are paid for completed work, “even if it’s graded to be low quality,” with fraud as the only exception.
- Under the question about being deactivated without pay, it says work “deemed fraudulent, incomplete, or rejected during review will not be paid.”
Rejected-in-review and low-quality aren’t the same thing, but a worker can’t see which bucket their tasks landed in. If you end up in a dispute, screenshot both answers. They’re the company’s own words.
The complaints on file follow that fault line. The Better Business Bureau shows 8 complaints in three years, all closed in the last 12 months, and all 8 marked “Unanswered,” meaning the business didn’t respond. They’re one side’s account, not findings. One contractor says they’re owed $3,240 for 18 tasks at $180 each after being removed from a finance project in May 2026. Another describes about 35 hours of Hindi prompt work, $525 withheld, and a ban citing guideline violations. A third says their account was deactivated shortly after they asked support about a missing week of pay.
Why the 4.5 on Trustpilot doesn’t settle it
Alignerr links its “TrustPilot | 4.5” badge right on the homepage, and the score is real: 4.5 from 2,879 reviews when we checked, with 82% five-star and 9% one-star. The profile is claimed, on a paid Trustpilot subscription, and marked as inviting its users to leave reviews.
Look at what’s being reviewed, though. Trustpilot’s own AI summary of 2,203 recent reviews says the praise centers on the AI interview, an agent called “Zara” that screens applicants. Most of these reviews were written by people who’d just finished an interview, not by people who’d waited on a paycheck. The profile also shows Alignerr replying to 0% of negative reviews.
Worker forums read very differently. Breaking Even scored 306 Reddit discussions about Alignerr from May 25 to August 16, 2026: 53% negative, 43% neutral and 4% positive. Account deactivation was the most common complaint, followed by technical problems and payment problems.
Both numbers are real. They’re measuring different moments. The interview goes well for most people; the trouble, when it comes, comes later.
The 30-day clause almost nobody reads
Alignerr’s Terms of Use require disputes to go to binding, individual arbitration under JAMS rules in Delaware, and they waive your right to join a class action. That makes it harder for a group of unpaid contractors to act together. Alignerr says it will pay arbitration fees on claims under $75,000.
There’s an exit, but it’s short and it’s by post. According to section (f) of the arbitration agreement, you can opt out if you:
- Write a notice that clearly says you want to opt out of the Terms’ arbitration agreement.
- Include your name and residence address.
- Include the email address or phone number tied to your Alignerr account.
- Mail it to 2261 Market St., STE 85891, San Francisco CA 94114, postmarked within 30 days of first accepting the Terms.
Email doesn’t count under that wording, so use tracked mail and keep the receipt. Whether opting out is right for you is a personal call, and we’re not lawyers; if you’re already in a pay dispute, a local employment or contract lawyer can tell you what the clause means where you live.
How to apply without getting burned
Alignerr’s popularity has made its name useful to scammers, and its own process leaves room for unpaid time. A few habits cover most of the risk:
- Start only at alignerr.com or app.alignerr.com. If a “recruiter” reaches you on Telegram or WhatsApp and asks for your ID by message, stop. Verification runs through Persona inside the app.
- Never pay to join. Alignerr’s FAQ says you don’t pay for the Hubstaff account either. Anyone asking for a fee, equipment deposit or “training cost” isn’t Alignerr.
- Screenshot the pay terms on every project before you start, including whether it’s hourly, per task or per finished hour. Rates can change mid-project.
- Keep your own log of hours and task IDs. If a project is paused, you’ll need it.
- Treat assessments as possibly unpaid. Breaking Even reports evaluation phases that take hours and often pay little or nothing if you don’t advance.
- If money goes missing, contact [email protected] or Intercom in the app, keep every reply, then file with the BBB and your state’s labor or consumer agency if it isn’t resolved.
Worth your time, not your rent
Apply if you have a degree, a professional specialty or strong coding skills, and you’re adding Alignerr to other income rather than relying on it. The coding and STEM work is real, and the better-paid projects do exist.
Skip it, or keep it strictly on the side, if you need predictable weekly money, if you’re uneasy handing biometric data to a verification vendor, or if you can’t afford to lose a week’s work to a sudden removal.
If you’re comparing platforms, we’ve looked at the same questions for Outlier AI, Handshake AI and Mercor. Healthcare language roles like the ones on Alignerr’s board are covered in our guide to healthcare AI trainer jobs.
How we checked this
On September 30, 2026 we read Alignerr’s homepage, full FAQ (general and Hubstaff sections), and Terms of Use and Applicant Privacy Notice. We downloaded all 5,624 roles from the public feed that powers alignerr.com/jobs and calculated the midpoint of each advertised hourly range, then the median by category. We also read Alignerr’s Trustpilot and BBB profiles on the same day. Worker pay and sentiment figures are attributed to Breaking Even, which publishes its methods.
We didn’t apply, verify an identity, or do any paid work, so we can’t confirm payment timing or how disputes are handled in practice. Listed rates aren’t earnings, and roles may be duplicated across countries or languages.
Prices, plans and features change often. Check the official site before you pay. Datalevo isn’t affiliated with or paid by any company mentioned here. Research and drafting were AI-assisted, and every figure was checked against the linked sources. Our full process is on the How We Review page.
FAQs
Is Alignerr legit or a scam?
Alignerr is legit. It’s run by Alignerr LLC in San Francisco, powered by Labelbox, and contractors do get paid. The risks are sudden removals, unpaid assessment time and pay disputes, so keep your own records from day one.
How much does Alignerr really pay per hour?
Across 5,624 listings on September 30, 2026, the typical role’s midpoint was $60 an hour, with STEM at $55 and Coding at $60. The homepage claims an $80 average, and workers surveyed by Breaking Even report around $37 on average once gaps and low-paid phases are counted.

Its FAQ says two things. One answer says completed work is paid even if graded low quality; another says work rejected during review won’t be paid. Screenshot both if you’re in a dispute.
Is it safe to give Alignerr my ID?
Verification runs through Persona, and Alignerr’s privacy notice says it may collect ID numbers and biometric data such as face prints. Only upload inside app.alignerr.com, never to someone who contacts you on a messaging app.
Why was my Alignerr account deactivated?
Alignerr’s FAQ lists policy violations, low-quality work, inactivity and failed verification checks. Email [email protected] or use Intercom in the app, ask for payment for accepted work, and keep copies of everything.
