Quick answer
Cancel Claude Pro, Max or Ultra on web, iPhone or Android, beat the 24-hour renewal rule, and see who can refund you.
Last checked November 3, 2026 · How we review
On the Claude website, Max costs $100 a month. Buy the same plan inside the iPhone app and Apple’s listing says $124.99. That’s $299.88 more a year for identical access, and it’s the first thing to know before you decide how to cancel your Claude subscription, because for some people the right move is switching where they pay, not quitting.
If you do want out, it takes under a minute on any device, as long as you cancel in the place that bills you. Our verdict on Claude’s billing: Verified. The cancel button is where Anthropic says it is and the rules are published. The strict part is refunds, which most people outside a handful of countries won’t get.
We read Anthropic’s cancellation and refund help articles, its Consumer Terms (effective October 8, 2025), the pricing page and the US App Store listing on November 3, 2026. We didn’t cancel a paid plan ourselves, so the steps below are Anthropic’s, not a walkthrough of our own account.
Who bills you decides where you cancel
Claude has three billing routes, and each one has its own off switch. Cancelling in the wrong place does nothing. Look at the receipt: a card statement line from Anthropic means the website; an Apple or Google Play receipt means the app store.
| You subscribed on | Cancel in | Refunds are decided by |
|---|---|---|
| claude.ai or the Claude desktop app | Settings, then Billing, then Cancel | Anthropic support |
| The Claude iPhone or iPad app | The app’s Billing menu, or your Apple subscriptions | Apple only |
| The Claude Android app | The app’s Billing menu, or Google Play subscriptions | Anthropic support checks eligibility |
How to cancel Claude subscription on the website or desktop app
This covers Pro, Max and Ultra bought on the web, and it works the same in the desktop app on Mac, Windows or Linux:
- Sign in at claude.ai or open the desktop app.
- Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner.
- Choose Settings, then the Billing section.
- Click Cancel and confirm.
Your paid features stay on until the end of the period you’ve already paid for; Anthropic’s cancellation article says the change takes effect at the end of the current billing period. After that the account drops to the Free plan. Cancelling doesn’t close the account; that’s a separate step, covered below.

Cancel Claude Pro, Max or Ultra on iPhone or Android
Bought it in the app? Then Apple or Google holds the subscription, and the website’s Cancel button won’t touch it. Anthropic gives the same path on both systems:
- Open the Claude app and tap your initials in the top-right corner.
- Tap Billing.
- Tap Manage subscription and follow the store’s prompts.
Already deleted the app? On an iPhone, go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel Claude there. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app never cancels anything.
The 24-hour rule, with real dates
Claude renews automatically and charges the next period up front. To avoid that charge, cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date. Anthropic’s Consumer Terms give their own example: subscribe on January 25 and you must cancel by February 23 to avoid the February 24 renewal.
That matters most on the annual Pro plan, which is $200 billed up front. Miss the cutoff by a day and you’ve committed to another full year, and the terms say fees aren’t refunded when you cancel; you just keep access until the term ends. A calendar reminder two days before your renewal date costs nothing.
You can’t move the billing date, either. Anthropic’s billing FAQ says the only way to get a new one is to unsubscribe and subscribe again on the day you want.
Can you get a Claude refund?
Usually not. The terms say all payments are non-refundable unless the terms themselves or the law say otherwise. Here’s where the exceptions are:
- EEA and UK: Anthropic’s refund article says you may get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated to how much you used.
- Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan: the Consumer Terms give a 7-day right to cancel without a reason and get reimbursed within 14 days. If you used Claude during those 7 days, Anthropic may keep a proportionate amount. The window doesn’t reset if you switch tiers or resubscribe.
- Everyone else on web billing: open Get help from your initials menu, choose Send us a message, then Claude Refund Request, and the messenger checks your eligibility. Don’t expect a yes by default.
- iPhone and iPad: only Apple can refund. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com. Asking for a refund doesn’t cancel the subscription, so cancel separately.
- Android: contact Anthropic support; for a lapsed subscription include your Google Play order number, the one that starts with GPA.
- If Anthropic ends your plan: for a reason other than a breach of the terms, website subscribers get a pro rata refund for the unused time. A ban for breaking the terms means no refund.
One warning from the same article: if you’ve opened a chargeback with your bank, Anthropic can’t process a refund while the dispute is pending. Pick one route. OpenAI handles disputes the same way, as our ChatGPT cancellation guide explains.
That 30-day refund page isn’t Anthropic’s
Search “Claude refund” on Bing and the top ten includes a refunds page at anthropics.com, with an s, promising money back within 30 days. That site belongs to the maker of PortraitPro, a photo editing program, with an address in Gloucester, England. It doesn’t mention Claude at all. Its 30-day guarantee covers its own software, not your Claude plan, so don’t quote it to Anthropic support and don’t send it your details about a Claude charge.
Paying through the App Store? Compare before you quit
If price is why you’re cancelling, check this first. These are Anthropic’s web prices against the in-app prices on the US App Store listing, both read on November 3, 2026:
| Plan | claude.ai (web) | iPhone app | Extra per year in the app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, monthly | $20 | $20.00 | $0 |
| Pro, annual | $200 | $214.99 | $14.99 |
| Max, monthly | $100 | $124.99 | $299.88 |
| Ultra, monthly | $200 | $249.99 | $599.88 |
Prices on the web exclude tax, and the App Store figure is what Apple shows, so the gap you pay can differ a little. On Pro monthly there’s no reason to switch. On Max or Ultra, letting the Apple subscription run to its end date and then subscribing on claude.ai saves real money. Anthropic’s refund article adds that App Store subscribers can’t even upgrade to a Team plan in place; the Apple subscription has to be cancelled first.
Deleting your account is a separate step
Closing the account doesn’t stop the billing for you. Anthropic’s account deletion article tells paid users to cancel first, wait for the paid period to end, and only then delete. Deletion is permanent: chats, projects and settings go with it, so export anything you want from the web or desktop app before you press the button.
Leaving because you lost track of old conversations rather than because of price? Our guide on referencing another chat in Claude covers chat search and memory, which may fix the real annoyance. And if you’re dropping several AI subscriptions at once, the same 24-hour habit applies to Grammarly too.
