TurboScribe has a landing page for doctors and nurses that says the service can slot into “HIPAA-compliant workflows.” Read its terms and privacy policy and you won’t find a business associate agreement, the contract US healthcare providers need before a vendor handles patient data. The privacy policy itself was last updated on 23 August 2022.
That gap is the honest answer to “is TurboScribe safe.” For podcasts, lectures, YouTube videos and your own meetings, it’s a real, well-reviewed tool and we’d call it safe to use. For recordings you’re legally bound to protect, its promises live in a blog FAQ rather than in the documents you agree to. Add a no-refund rule and a pile of complaints about $120 renewals, and our verdict is Caution.
What TurboScribe is and who’s behind it
TurboScribe turns audio and video into text using Whisper, the speech recognition model OpenAI released as open source. Its homepage counter showed more than 55 million hours transcribed when we looked on 16 October 2026.
The terms name the operator as Leif Erikson Ventures, LLC, a US company, and the site’s FAQ introduces the founder as Leif, who says he spent almost a decade building AI systems at companies like Meta. That’s the company’s own description; we found nothing contradicting it.
There are two plans. The free one transcribes 3 files a day, each up to 30 minutes, at lower priority. TurboScribe Unlimited costs $20 billed monthly or $120 billed yearly ($10 a month), with 10-hour uploads, 50 files at a time and translation into more than 130 languages.

Is TurboScribe safe for private recordings? Two documents, two answers
TurboScribe makes strong privacy promises. They just sit in a blog post, the Security and Privacy FAQ of 19 March 2025, written for “law or medicine” customers. The privacy policy that governs your account was adapted from Basecamp’s open-source policy template and says much less.
| Question | Security FAQ (March 2025) | Privacy policy (August 2022) |
|---|---|---|
| Encrypted while stored? | Yes, AES-256 at rest | Mentions only SSL/TLS in transit |
| Used to train AI? | No | Not mentioned |
| Who processes the audio? | In-house, no third-party transcription APIs | “Subprocessors” including cloud and analytics providers |
| What happens when you delete? | Gone at once, can’t be recovered | Inaccessible at once, purged from backups within 90 days |
| Healthcare (HIPAA)? | Not mentioned | Not mentioned |
None of the FAQ answers looks false to us, and the two documents don’t contradict each other so much as cover different ground. The issue is weight. A blog post can change without notice; a privacy policy is what you’d point to if something went wrong. Our Jobright review shows the opposite case: a company whose refund promises are written into a dated policy.
If you record patients or clients
Under HIPAA, a covered entity can share protected health information with a vendor only after getting written assurances, usually a business associate agreement, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. TurboScribe’s medical page stops short of claiming compliance. Before uploading a single session, email the founder (the FAQ lists [email protected]) and ask whether he’ll sign one. If the answer isn’t a signed document, keep patient audio off the service. Lawyers and therapists with confidentiality duties should ask the same question.
What “Unlimited” means in practice
TurboScribe’s FAQ says there’s no cap on overall use and that its systems handle at least 720 hours a month, which is every hour of a 30-day month. A help article from November 2023 explains that people who go over that are moved to a “High Volume Mode” where files queue instead of transcribing in real time.
A few customers say they hit limits far earlier. On Trustpilot, one reviewer captioning a media library wrote that uploads were blocked after several months and that restoring them was tied to paying $2,000 more. Another said bulk uploads triggered errors and an upgrade prompt two days after paying. We can’t verify either account, and TurboScribe hasn’t answered them publicly. If you plan to upload hundreds of files, email support for the real limit before you pay for a year.
Where the complaints cluster: the $120 renewal
TurboScribe’s Trustpilot page shows 4.4 stars from 505 reviews, with 380 five-star and 91 one-star. Most people who review it love the accuracy. The trouble is concentrated, and the company hasn’t replied to any of the 52 negative reviews Trustpilot counts for it.
We read the 20 newest one-star reviews on 16 October 2026, posted between 9 April and 14 October. Twelve are about money: annual plans renewing at $120 without a warning email, charges after a cancellation, or refunds refused. Five are about uploads failing or usage limits on paid plans. Several say support emails went unanswered.
The terms explain why refunds are hard to get. They say all purchases are non-refundable, that cancelling takes effect at the end of the paid term, and that “an email or phone request to cancel your account is not automatically considered cancellation.” The terms are dated 21 September 2022.
Do the sum before you pick a plan. Yearly is $120, monthly is $20, so the annual plan pays off from the seventh month. For a single project, one month at $20 is cheaper, and you can cancel the same day without losing the month. If you go yearly, put a reminder in your calendar for two weeks before the renewal date. It’s the same trap we found in Undetectable AI’s yearly trial and in JustDone’s $2 week, though TurboScribe at least shows both prices side by side.
How to cancel TurboScribe properly
These steps come from TurboScribe’s support page, checked on 16 October 2026. Flows change, so confirm each screen as you go.
- Log in and open Account Settings.
- Click Manage Subscription. That opens the payment portal.
- Click Cancel Plan and take a screenshot of the confirmation, including the date your access ends.
- Check your next card statement. If a charge still appears, reply to the receipt email with your screenshot and ask your card issuer about a dispute if you get no answer.
Deleting your account is the other route. The terms say it typically cancels subscriptions immediately, and the help page says it deletes every file and transcript, so export everything first.
A safer option for sensitive audio
Because TurboScribe runs on Whisper, you can get the same underlying model without uploading anything. OpenAI’s Whisper is free under the MIT licence and runs on your own computer, so the recording never leaves your hands. It’s slower on an ordinary laptop and takes some setup, but for a confidential interview or a patient note that trade is usually worth it.
FAQs
Is TurboScribe safe to use?
For everyday recordings, yes: it’s a real US company, the site uses encrypted connections, and its 2025 security FAQ says files are encrypted at rest and never used to train AI. The weak spots are a 2022 privacy policy that doesn’t repeat those promises and a no-refund billing policy.
Is TurboScribe HIPAA compliant?
TurboScribe doesn’t say it is. A medical landing page says it can fit into HIPAA-compliant workflows, but none of its public legal pages mention a business associate agreement, which healthcare providers need before sharing patient data with a vendor. Ask the company in writing before uploading patient audio.
Does TurboScribe use my recordings to train AI?
Its Security and Privacy FAQ of March 2025 says no, and that transcription runs in-house rather than through third-party APIs. The binding privacy policy, last updated in August 2022, doesn’t address AI training at all.
Can I get a refund from TurboScribe?
The terms say all purchases are non-refundable. Cancelling stops the next charge but keeps your access until the paid period ends, so the $120 yearly plan is the one to watch.
How do I cancel TurboScribe?
Open Account Settings, choose Manage Subscription to reach the payment portal, and click Cancel Plan. The terms say an email or phone request doesn’t count as cancelling, so save the confirmation screen.
